City as Stage: A Conversation with Tania Bruguera, Peter Marcuse, Damon Rich and Radhika Subramaniam

This discussion explores urban space as a site of contestation and possibility. It will begin with a screening of Yto Barrada’s video Beau Geste (2009), followed by a conversation between Tania Bruguera (Artist), Peter Marcuse (Columbia University), Damon Rich (Architect), and Radhika Subramaniam (Parsons The NewSchool for Design).

How does the current economic crisis reconfigure urban space, specifically in New York? How do contemporary artistic and urban practices engage with and impact the various social imaginaries of the city? Bringing together the disciplines of urban planning and design with artistic and curatorial practices, this platform considers the city as a stage of conflict, desire, and imagination.

This program is free of charge and open to the public, based on a first-come, first-serve basis. Capacity is limited, we kindly suggest an early arrival.

All events will be conducted in English and each venue is physically accessible.

Continuing the success of Professor Harvey’s online video lectures of Marx’s Capital, Volume I, we are currently raising money to continue the project with new lectures on Capital Volumes II and III.

Inspired by the overwhelming interest in the Volume I lectures, which according to Google Analytics have logged over 700,000 page views from 10,884 cities in 187 countries since June 2008, we are happy to announce the next stage of this project.

Professor Harvey is planning on teaching a semester class on Capital Volumes II and III in the Spring of 2011. With your help, we plan to film, edit, and post a new set of free online videos to this site. To do this, we need to raise our budget of $10,000.

Technical Difficulties – Resolved

As of today, Wednesday July 14, we are experiencing difficulties with our streaming videos of the Capital lectures. Our provider, Blip.tv, is currently working to resolve the issue and we hope to have the streaming videos back online asap. In the mean time, you can still download the videos either from this site or from iTunes and watch them on your computer. Apologies for the inconvenience.

Update July 15: Classes 7-12 are now being streamed via Vimeo, while classes 1-6 and 13 remain with Blip.tv. All classes are again accessible via streaming video.
